ALL ABOUT BETA ALANINE

What is Beta Alanine What benefits does it provide How does it work

What is Beta Alanine?

Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid obtained through protein foods such as chicken, beef, pork, fish, etc. However, this compound, when taken in certain doses through supplementation, has impressive effects on how the body functions.

What benefits does Beta Alanine provide?

Science-backed research has consistently shown:

Increases in Power and Strength

Enhanced and Increased Muscle Mass

Increased Anaerobic Output (short duration output increases)

Increased Aerobic Endurance (long duration output increases)

Muscular Fatigue Delays/Decreases

How does it work?

The majority of Beta-Alanine’s effects come through boosting of an intramuscular dipeptide (two amino acids) called carnosine. To function effectively, muscle cells rely on the powerful intracellular buffer carnosine to avoid becoming acidic (low pH) during exercise. If you want your muscles to remain strong and maintain powerful contractions, they need to be in an optimal pH range. If they don’t and the pH drops below that optimal level, you have significantly less strength and fatigue more quickly.

You know this is happening when you feel that familiar burn in your muscles or even when you’re lifting heavy and reach muscular failure. Muscle pH has dropped and it’s largely a result of an increase in hydrogen ions (H+) which build up when you break down the high energy compound ATP during exercise. The breakdown of ATP and the subsequent rise in H+ concentrations occurs in our all of our energy systems but is most prevalent in an energy system called glycolysis which also produces lactic acid. Lactic acid releases H+ ions, contributing further to the pool of H+ that’s filling your muscles from the breakdown of ATP.

Imagine being able to lift heavier, for longer periods of time, with more overall output. THAT’S BETA ALANINE!

If you had more carnosine in your muscles, you would. When excess H+ are released and build up at a rapid rate from exercise, muscular pH to drops fast. Your body’s natural carnosine levels become overwhelmed and your energy and endurance decline rapidly and your strength suffers.

Since hydrogen ions are swarming your muscle cells, whether you feel a burn or not, any added buffering of these ions is the key to keeping your muscles firing. Carnosine does exactly that, naturally absorbing H+ and keeping us closer to the optimal pH range, allowing us to train harder and train longer. Of course, the challenge is that we only have a limited level of naturally stored carnosine in our muscles. With more stored carnosine, you could lift more and lift longer. You would be stronger and most likely bigger, leaner and more muscular. So how can we increase our carnosine levels? Find out below.

Supplementing with Beta Alanine

You can increase your carnosine levels by increasing the ingestion of Beta-Alanine. Direct supplemented intake of Beta Alanine is the quickest and easiest way to increase your muscular stores of Carnosine. Most users benefit from taking Beta Alanine in pre or post workout for a longer duration as it leads to greater intramuscular stores.

As carnosine levels increase, performance benefits, leading to lean muscle gains will follow. This can occur in as little as one week, however to reap the full benefits it is recommending to continue taking Beta Alanine pre or post workout for at least 3 months.

Immediate benefits: Many users experience intense vasodilation/pumps from the very first dose of Beta-Alanine. Because Beta-Alanine increases carnosine and carnosine is a powerful precursor in generating nitric oxide synthase (a group of enzymes necessary for making the powerful vasodilator nitric oxide), this is an added, immediate benefit of Beta-Alanine. Muscle pumps are beneficial to recovery as they increase the flow of nutrients directly to the muscle being worked. This is a 1 + 1 = 3 scenario. Your body is able to produce more strength output, for longer periods of time, while increasing your own body’s recovery. Beta Alanine supplementation is a win-win and we do recommend it for all levels of athletes, male and female.
