WHY IS ‘WHEY’ A SUPERFOOD?

Whey is an incredibly powerful superfood

Most all of us know that Whey Protein is a potent and powerful protein, you’ve undoubtedly heard about it by athletes and in articles, etc.  But, what makes Whey so special?  One of the largest reasons behind its popularity is because it contains more BCAA than any other protein in existence (BCAA or “branch-chain amino acids” are the key amino acids responsible for the makeup of the protein and its effects on our bodies in regards to muscle-building and fat loss). BUT… guess what, not all protein is created equal.

Most of us have heard whey is quick digesting and easily absorbed, in fact, whey is the only food to score  101 out of 100 on the bioavailability scale.  The combination of the superior amino acid profile of whey (again, this is a more potent protein than any other) COMBINED with its super-fast digesting profile AND high absorption rates make it the IDEAL post-workout protein boost.

Amazing!  But what other benefits does whey protein offer?

Whey is an antioxidant, an immunity-booster and has anti-aging properties.  Whey is also beneficial for brain health and assists in disease prevention, while serving as an ANTI-CANCER SUPERFOOD!

Whey protein contains a wealth of the amino acids cysteine and methionine. These are well-known for their immune-boosting effect. These amino acids convert into glutathione. Glutathione is known as “the body’s master antioxidant”, its importance and benefits cannot be overstated.  In fact, it is used by every cell and tissue in the body.  Glutathione is particularly important for:

  • DNA synthesis and repair
  • Reducing the oxidative stress and inflammation
  • Slowing down the aging process
  • Promoting and supporting brain health

Optimal glutathione levels are essential for preventing degenerative diseases, such as Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.  In today’s health-poor society, disease-prevention should be at the top of all of our minds. WOW for Whey!

Whey is anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial

If it wasn’t amazing enough, Whey also has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial qualities. Whey is rich in a compound called lactoferrin, which is the second most abundant protein in breast milk. You may have heard of this one before as it is helps promote immunity in new-born babies. Lactoferrin inhibits the survival, growth and spread of tumors, viruses, bacteria, and fungal infections. Research has confirmed lactoferrin’s anti-bacterial activity against all kinds of nasty stuff, including E- Coli and Salmonella.  Whoa! This superfood fights off the bad guys like a super-hero too!

Whey helps prevents cardiovascular diseases

Earlier we mentioned Lactoferrin.  Lactoferrin has also been proven to reduce cholesterol levels, which gives Whey a potent power to prevent heart disease. This is synergistically enhanced by whey’s ability to work with enzymes that control and lower blood pressure. The latest research from the University of Reading in the U.K. found that regularly supplementing your food intake with whey protein could lower your risk of stroke and heart disease by up to 8%!  This is powerful!

Getting your whey protein right

People generally know what to avoid in products, whether they actually act on that knowledge is a different matter entirely.  However, if you’re looking towards using Whey for health reasons, it only makes sense to look for the healthiest brands you can trust.  Avoid things like chemical artificial sweeteners, instead look for ones that use stevia, or even better: Monkfruit.

Your ideal Whey protein powder is going to be made of the highest grade Whey available. Whey Protein powders are frequently found in two forms, or a combination of these forms. These include whey concentrate, and the more pure whey isolate.  Whey Isolate has the lactose sugars and excess fats stripped from it and offers only the benefits of the Whey Protein itself.  On a per-gram basis, Whey Isolate contains more protein, fewer carbs, and less fat. Whey Isolate is also generally more expensive to make, so if you’re on a serious budget, find a natural whey that you can afford.

You also want to avoid certain additives. Look out for preservatives, fillers, dyes, chemicals & artificial flavors.  Ideally your Whey will contain EXTRA antioxidants to further boost its superfood abilities.  For example, The Right Whey by CleanFuel Nutrition is a 100% Whey Isolate with a natural digestive enzyme (Papain or Papaya Extract) which helps the body break down and absorb protein but ALSO acts as a potent antioxidant.  Papain has shown such powerful antioxidant properties that you can find hosts of studies regarding its anti-cancer properties and potential uses in treatments.  This gives The Right Whey the edge as a superfood ideally placed in a health-based, disease and cancer-preventative diet for all ages.

Be sure your Whey Protein is 100% Whey Isolate, Non-GMO, free of artificial ingredients, and contains extra digestive enzymes and antioxidants.

Don’t forget to drink your Whey!  Here’s to your health!
